Peru

Lima

Peru’s culinary capital is famous for ceviche and seafood, but Lima has a fast-growing vegan scene in Miraflores, Barranco, and San Isidro. Peruvian biodiversity makes it a superb supravegan city: potatoes, quinoa, purple corn, cacao, tropical fruit, and Andean vegetables.

Budget: $5-8/day cooking. $8-14/day with occasional restaurants.

Markets

  • Mercado de Productores San Isidro: clean, safe, enthusiastic vendors, and a wide range of produce.
  • Bioferia Organic Market in Miraflores: Saturday organic market at Parque Reducto / Avenida Benavides until around 2 PM.
  • Mercado Surquillo: traditional market near Miraflores with exotic Andean vegetables, potato varieties, oca, mashua, maca, and cheap produce.

Supermarkets

  • Vivanda/Wong: premium supermarkets with strong produce, imported items, plant milks, and nutritional yeast.
  • Plaza Vea: mid-range chain for staples, canned beans, rice, oats, and frozen berries.
  • Metro: budget-friendly and good for dried beans, lentils, and rice.
  • Tottus: good organic section in larger locations.

Health stores

  • Naturlandia in Miraflores: health food store and café with vegan snacks.
  • Samsara vegan market pop-up in Miraflores on Saturdays.
  • Barranco organic stores along Avenida Grau and surrounding streets.

Restaurants

  • La Recontra + Oiga in Barranco: vegan fast food and plant-based Peruvian dishes.
  • Seitan Urban Bistro: vegan Peruvian food and vegan Pisco Sour.
  • Amateaur Cafe: all-vegan café, pastries, and coffee.
  • Asianica: Japanese-Peruvian fusion with many veganizable options.
  • Noqa in Polvos Azules: budget vegan menú del día.
  • Good Karma in the historic center: inexpensive menu del día.
  • Ukaw Chocolate: Peruvian chocolate with vegan options.
  • El Jardín de Jazmín: vegan and gluten-free modern dishes.

Accidentally supravegan

  • Causa with vegetable filling and no mayonnaise.
  • Chicha morada, a purple corn drink rich in anthocyanins.
  • Quinoa soup if made with vegetable stock.
  • Picarones are often vegan but fried, so treat as an occasional cultural food, not a supravegan staple.

Local staples

  • 4,000+ potato varieties
  • Quinoa
  • Aji peppers
  • Lucuma
  • Maca
  • Purple corn/maíz morado
  • Caigua
  • Cacao
